Coalesce 2024: How David Yurman leveraged dbt Cloud to modernize and consolidate 3 data warehouses
By leveraging dbt, with multi-project architecture and data contracts, we have made amazing progress in rebuilding and consolidating our data platform.
David Yurman had slowly accrued three legacy data warehouses, all of which were still in active use. This resulted in worst of ALL worlds: data silos and mismatches in key information. Additionally there was the incredible operational burden of maintaining pipelines for thousands of custom database models leveraging 3 different technology stacks.
By leveraging dbt, with multi-project architecture and data contracts, we have made amazing progress in rebuilding and consolidating our data platform.
Taking inspiration from the “strangler” approach, traditionally used in Microservice development, we established legacy facades which enabled us to gracefully cutover our consumers, avoiding impedance that previously resulted in “failure to launch”. In our talk we will share details of our new architecture, the process we used to migrate, and tips and lessons learned in our journey.
